NZ Company Search: Beyond the Companies Register

The NZ Companies Register is a powerful public resource, but it is designed for compliance, not for sales intelligence. Here is what it tells you and what you need on top of it.

The NZ Companies Register at companies.govt.nz is a powerful public resource. It is free, comprehensive, and updated daily. But it is designed for compliance verification, not for sales intelligence.

What the NZ Companies Register tells you

The register gives you:

  • Company legal name and registration number
  • Date of incorporation
  • Registered office address
  • Director names and dates of appointment
  • Shareholder information (where disclosed)
  • Annual return status
  • Entity type (limited company, unlimited, foreign, etc.)

What the register does not tell you

For sales prospecting, the register has significant gaps:

  • No email addresses or phone numbers. The register is for legal communication via postal address only.
  • No website or social media links. You have to search manually.
  • No industry classification in plain English. The ANZSCO code requires a lookup table to interpret.
  • No company summary or description. You cannot tell if a company is a cafe, an IT firm, or a construction company without researching.
  • No alert system. You cannot receive a notification when new companies matching your criteria register.
  • No bulk export. Extracting a list of all new registrations from a specific region requires manual browsing.

What sales-intelligence tools add

Purpose-built tools built on top of Companies Register data add the enrichment layer that makes the data actionable:

  • Contact discovery: Website scraping, Google Business Profile lookup, and director history matching to find email addresses and phone numbers
  • Industry filtering in plain English: Search by "construction" or "technology" rather than ANZSCO codes
  • Daily alerts: New companies matching your criteria delivered each morning
  • AI summaries: A one-paragraph description of what each company likely does, inferred from its name, industry, and director history
  • CRM integration: Track which companies you have contacted, their responses, and your pipeline
