What Is an NZBN? New Zealand Business Number Explained for New Companies
Every NZ company gets an NZBN automatically when it incorporates. Here is what it means, where to find it, and why your accountant will ask for it.
You Just Got an NZBN - What Is It?
When Companies Office registers your New Zealand limited company, it assigns two numbers: a Company Number (the old identifier) and an NZBN (New Zealand Business Number) - a 13-digit identifier that uniquely identifies your business across all government agencies.
Your NZBN never changes, even if you change your company name or structure. Think of it as your business equivalent of an IRD number.
Where to Find Your NZBN
- Log into the New Zealand Business Number register
- Search the Companies Register at companiesoffice.govt.nz
- Ask your accountant - they will have noted it when setting you up
When You Will Be Asked for Your NZBN
Your NZBN is requested by:
- IRD - for GST registration and employer obligations
- Banks - when opening a business account
- ACC - for levy invoicing
- Government agencies - for RealMe business login and procurement
- Suppliers and clients - for invoicing and compliance checks
NZBN vs Company Number
Your company number (e.g. 1234567) is issued by the Companies Office and used for Companies Register filings. Your NZBN (13 digits, starts with 9429) is a cross-government identifier used beyond the Companies Office. Both identify your company; most day-to-day business uses the company number.
Next Steps After Incorporation
Now that your company is registered, your first priorities are:
- Register for GST if your turnover will exceed NZ$60,000 per year
- Set up a business bank account (bring your NZBN and certificate of incorporation)
- Register as an employer with IRD if you are taking on staff
- Set up Xero or MYOB and connect it to your bank
